To deepen the collaboration between industry, academia, and research in cultivating talent and promote the deep integration of theoretical teaching and industrial practice, on June 21, with the support of the Medical College teaching team and Zhixin College, Assistant Professor Li Liang of the Medical College led students from the "Introduction to New Drug Development" course to Jiangxi Ji'an for a summer practice activity called "Pharmaceutical Immersion," with graduate teaching assistant Wang Guozhe assisting.

This activity received strong support from Jing Yue, Chairman of the Board of Jiangxi Biological Products Research Co., Ltd., Yao Xiaodong, General Manager, and Huang Jianyong, Deputy General Manager, and Zou Dong, Manager of Jiangxi Duihua Winery Co., Ltd., among other company leaders. Through on-site visits, technical exchanges, and thematic discussions, 14 teachers and students gained an in-depth understanding of the entire process from laboratory research and development to industrial transformation, building a bridge between theory and practice for cultivating composite new drug development talents.

Entering the frontline of biopharmaceutical manufacturing:

Decoding the industrial practice of "Quality by Design"

At Jiangxi Biological Products Research Co., Ltd., the practice team went deep into the core production area of antitoxins and immune serums. Guided by professionals, the team visited the R&D laboratory, pilot plant, and GMP production workshop in sequence, systematically understanding the complete process of new drug development from laboratory research to industrial production. The students focused on learning the application of the "Quality by Design" concept in actual production and the specific requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice for pharmaceuticals.

"From target discovery to clinical trials and then to large-scale production, every link requires strict quality control standards." Yao Xiaodong introduced, "The development of a new drug often takes more than 10 years and requires hundreds of millions of yuan in investment." In the exchange session, the students engaged in in-depth discussions with company experts on topics such as the development trends of the biopharmaceutical industry and talent cultivation needs.

"This visit gave me a visual understanding of the GMP standards in the textbook, and I also learned about the hardships and value of new drug development. As future scientific researchers, we must cultivate a rigorous scientific attitude and persistent spirit of research." said Tian Xuan, a student from Zhixin College.

Insights from traditional craftsmanship:

Cross-border integration of fermentation technology in the pharmaceutical field

At Duihua Winery, which boasts the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage techniques, the practice team members followed the trajectory of a drop of wine, going through each stage from grain pretreatment, koji addition, saccharification and fermentation, distillation, and manual blending, experiencing the modernized upgrading path of traditional solid-state fermentation technology.

On-site, students not only observed the subtle influence of temperature and humidity control in earthen jar fermentation on microbial activity, but also deeply understood how experienced techniques such as "watching flowers and picking wine" synergize with modern instrumental analysis to form a unique "sensory evaluation + physicochemical testing" dual quality control system.

Wang Boyu, a student from Shu De College, commented after the visit, "The domestication process of microorganisms in koji is surprisingly similar to our selection and breeding of production strains in drug development. This cross-border learning made me realize that traditional techniques are rich in scientific inspiration and technical reference space."

Industry-academia-research collaboration in cultivating talent:

Bridging the "last mile" from the classroom to industry

This "Pharmaceutical Immersion" summer practice activity is an important exploration by the Southern University of Science and Technology Medical College in implementing the "New Medical Science" construction concept, promoting the integration of production and education, and cultivating composite medical talents. By going deep into the frontline of drug research and development and traditional fermentation processes, students used real industrial scenarios as classrooms, systematically understanding the entire lifecycle management process of drugs from research and development to market launch in immersive learning, expanding their overall understanding of the pharmaceutical industry.

Li Liang pointed out that this kind of practice allows students to directly understand the industry's urgent need for interdisciplinary talents: they must have a solid scientific foundation, as well as engineering thinking, quality awareness, and collaborative abilities. In exchanges with company management, the practice team engaged in in-depth discussions on recruitment standards, R&D structures, and career paths, helping students clarify their future direction and laying the foundation for building school-enterprise co-construction practice platforms and strengthening joint talent cultivation mechanisms.

On the return journey, teachers and students spontaneously held a "mobile sharing session" in the high-speed rail carriage, engaging in lively exchanges on topics such as drug quality control, microbial technology applications, and industrial transformation logic, achieving a two-way leap from observation to thinking and from classroom to site.

This practice, through an integrated approach of "on-site investigation + expert dialogue + summary reflection," effectively promoted close integration between teaching and industry, providing an example for building a three-in-one talent cultivation closed loop of "curriculum—practice—research." In the future, the Medical College will continue to expand the dimensions of school-enterprise cooperation, promoting the development of the medical education system towards a more open, diverse, and integrated direction, cultivating more medical and technological innovation talents with a global vision and practical abilities.
